Kmart is adding new technology to its cash registers that will change the way we shop completely.
Using a technology platform called Slip, the discount store is getting rid of paper receipts in favor of “digital smart receipts.”
Instead of paper receipts, which most people can’t recycle because the ink used to print them isn’t recyclable, Kmart customers will get a fully itemized and tax-compliant record of their transactions in their bank app.
Paper receipts will still be available, since “smart receipts” are only available to NAB customers right now, but the store says “more banks are coming soon.”
The change makes it easier for customers to buy things because it’s easier to return things. It also aids corporations like Kmart in their efforts to become more environmentally friendly in their operations.
Lil Velis-Bowker, Kmart’s chief customer officer, said that the change will “improve and enhance” both in-store and online shopping for customers.

Kmart is the latest Australian store to use Slip, a technology that was made over four years and came out in 2020.
The CEO and co-founder of “smart receipts,” Paul Weingarth, told news.com.au that the idea came to him after he went shopping and came home with a ream of paper.
“In 2016, I purchased a chainsaw, and when I got the receipt, it was fifty centimeters long. That’s when I realized I needed Slip,” he added.”It was then that I concluded that I required something similar to Slip.”
A cashier asked me to photograph my receipt because she said it would fade over time, and I couldn’t fathom why.
We went through many versions of what became the Slip Smart Receipt, and we worked closely with retailers, banks, and customers to make sure it was as easy, convenient, and seamless as possible.
Paul said that Slyp launched in late 2020 and has quickly become a “growing network” after getting the support of Australia’s four biggest banks.
A firm spokeswoman added, “We currently have dozens of brands in 1800 locations in Australia.”
The CEO of Smart Receipts stated, “Every day, we add new retailers, and we’re working with all of Australia’s top banks to quickly integrate Smart Receipts into their mobile banking.”
Along with Kmart, the famous Australian clothing store Country Road is also joining the platform, as are hundreds of other national retailers like Chemist Warehouse, JD Sports, General Pants, Barbeques Galore, Mitre 10, and Cue.
Paul said that the main goal of Slip was to “keep as many paper receipts out of landfills as possible and work toward getting rid of them altogether.”
It is common practice, according to what he said, for paper receipts to be left behind in shopping carts or laying on our streets.
The majority of people are under the impression that paper receipts may be recycled; however, this is not the case. Instead of being recycled, paper receipts wind up in landfills or waterways. They are manufactured by utilizing a significant quantity of natural resources like trees, water, and oil; furthermore, they are coated in BPA/BPS chemicals, which renders it impossible to recycle them and renders them extremely unsustainable.
Some people will find the change to be big, but Kmart is sure that customers will “enjoy” the paperless option.
But the store made it clear that “paper receipts will still be available for customers who would rather have a printed copy.”
